High Performance Computing Systems

KC-07-01-02 FWP

20 c. Purpose

The goal of the Federal High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) Program is to accelerate the development of future generations of high performance computers and networks and the use of these resources in the Federal government and through the American economy. Bringing these resources to bear on problems important to the economy is the focus of the Scalable Computing Lab (SCL). A resource that is too complex, too difficult to understand or use and too unreliable is of no practical use no matter how efficient and cost-effective it is in theory. By taking an approach that is solidly grounded in applications, the SCL focuses on providing meaningful solutions for real problems, not just special aspects of problems. In the past these narrow, specialized performance measures have resulted in unbalanced machines that were of little use to broader problems, yet their influence was such that they had an impact beyond their original intent. The SCL is fostering the development of performance analysis tools that reflect the way computers are really used and will be effective in the design of better future computers.
