The system support staff realizes that electronic mail is a vital part of the way the SCL operates.
The following notes should help you understand how email works in our enviroment.
We are supporting sending mail from all of the workstations in the SCL, We are not and will
not support receiving mail on all the workstations. Most of the time mail sent to
user@host.scl.ameslab.gov is rejected or intercepted and forwarded to the mail server.
However sometimes it will get through and then get lost in a spool directory that is never
looked at or backed up. In short, if you care about your email, have users send it to
username@ameslab.gov or username@scl.ameslab.gov.
Our current mail server is an IMAP server running Courier
to manage all out mailing needs. To check your mail, you can simply use the webmail client located
here, or you can alternatively set up a mail client on
your computer to get your mail. Note that in order for this second option to work, you must be
on a computer with kerberos tickets and AFS tokens, which pretty much means that you can only set this
up on a computer inside the SCL network.
incoming mail: mail.scl.ameslab.gov
server type: IMAP
outgoing mail: mail.scl.ameslab.gov
Courier can read a mailfilter file in your home directory to filter your mail into various inboxes for easier reading, based on the contents of the message. This involves a .mailfilter file in your home directory. The file must have the following properties:
- It must be called .mailfilter and in your home directory
- It must have permissions 600; Courier will not deliver mail if it is group/world readable or writable
- You must give mail permissions to read your home directory. The command `fs sa ~ mail rl` will do this
For more detailed information on the syntax, do man 7 maildropfilter or view the help information online.
