SSH-Kerberos

The method of logging in to a machine depends on what machines you have access to. If you are inside our network (i.e. connected to our network from inside the SCL network), you may simply log into the machine you need, such as cluster, 4pack, or scink. If you are outside of our network, you must log in through gateway.scl.ameslab.gov. Please do so by typing the following:

ssh -l (your username here) gateway.scl.ameslab.gov

If you are on a computer running Windows, you most likely do not have a ssh client. If this is the case, you can download a client here.

Every six months you must change your password, regardless of which computer you log into. Since we use kerberos to authenticate users at the SCL, the standard UNIX passwd command will not work. Instead, type kpasswd at the prompt, and you be prompted in the same way. Also note that you will not be able to use your previous passwords here, as reusing passwords poses a potential security risk.
