Background:
All of the printers in the SCL are network printers. To print to a printer
from a UNIX workstation, you'll need to determine what type of file you
are printing.
If you are priting a PostScript file (which all of the printers allow you to do),
you'll need to type:
machine% lpr -P{printer name} file{s}
If you are priting a standard ASCII file, you'll need to convert the file
to PostScript and then print it. To make this easier, there is a program
called a2ps.
machine% a2ps -P{printer name} file{s}
To print to a printer from a PC running Windows 3.1/95/98/NT/2000/XP, you'll need to
go through Samba. Samba is a program that makes a UNIX workstation (currently
testweb.scl and aztec.fi are running Samba) available to 95/NT/3.1 as a normal
machine on the Microsoft network.
If you are in the SCL, you should be able to browse testweb and choose a printer.
If you're machine does not currently have the drivers installed for the printer,
you'll need the original Windows CD/disks. These can be obtained from 304 Wilhelm.
If you are in the FI domains, you'll need to specify a printer using the
full domain name. One of the administrators in 304 Wilhelm can do this for you if
necessary.
The full domain name for an FI printer is \\aztec.fi.ameslab.gov\{printer name}
When printing from a PC, there is no need to differentiate between PostScript
and non-PostScript files.
If you are unsure about which printers you may access,
please contact your sponser for a list of printers available to you.
